British Safety Guidelines for Gas Cylinder Installations in Camper Vans

UK Legal Requirements:

In the UK, vehicles used for work must display compressed gas stickers. While not mandatory for camper vans, it's advisable for safety reasons. However, only display the sticker when carrying gas to avoid confusion.

  • Vehicles are allowed a maximum of 2 x 10-liter bottles of compressed gas unless ventilated with a rotating rooftop device, in which case the limit is higher.
  • Flammable gas must be carried upright at all times.
  • Warning diamonds (green for high pressure, red for flammable) must be displayed if used for reward.

BS EN 1949:2002 - Main Points Summarized:

1. Cylinder Compartment Requirements:

  • Compartments must be sealed from the inside living area, accessible only from the outside.
  • Position cylinders away from heat sources (exhaust systems).
  • Design must secure cylinders rigidly, in the upright position, with accessible means at high and low levels.
  • No obstruction to connections, changeover valves, or pressure regulators.
  • Cylinders should be replaceable without disturbing installations.
  • Devices to secure cylinders must be operable without tools.
  • No installation of appliances or components that may damage the LPG installation or ignite escaping gas.

2. Ventilation:

  • Permanently ventilate cylinder compartments to the exterior of the vehicle.
  • Ventilated area requirements based on low or high-level ventilation.
  • Cylinders must not obstruct ventilation areas.

3. Internal Access to Cylinder Compartments:

  • Maximum two cylinders, each not exceeding 16kg, with internal access via a sealed door or hatch.
  • Door or hatch must be at least 50mm above the floor level of the cylinder compartment.
  • Alternative arrangements for ventilation if external access isn't possible.

Additional Information:

  • Ventilation for internal access may be provided by a single duct with specific measures.
  • Only one cylinder (max 7kg) allowed in this setup.
  • Duct specifications include diameter, length, positioning, and resistance to LPG.

CCCAMPERS prioritizes safety in camper conversions, adhering to BS EN 1949:2002 for proper gas cylinder installations. These guidelines ensure secure and compliant gas systems for your camper van adventures.
